Rider Rules
Tuscaloosa Mountain Flyers competed under the Alabama Cycling Association (ACA). The ACA Rule Book outlines rules and regulations for youth cycling competitions in Alabama, effective from January 1, 2024. It includes guidelines for participants, coaches, and parents to ensure a fair, safe, and inclusive environment. Key sections are as follows:
- Penalty Structure: Violations range from minor (yellow-level) to severe (red-level) consequences, including warnings, time penalties, disqualification, and permanent bans.
- Equipment and Protocol: Riders must use mountain bikes (26-29 inches) and wear approved helmets. Additional safety measures include bike checks and adhering to trail rules.
- Forms and Policies: Includes mandatory liability waivers, concussion policies, and anti-doping guidelines. A strict no-tolerance policy is in place for alcohol, drug, and tobacco use, with severe penalties for violations.
- Team and Coach Requirements: Teams must register annually with ACA, and coaches need specific qualifications based on experience levels. There are guidelines for student eligibility, team composition, and limitations on practice hours.
- Racing Rules and Safety: Riders must follow race protocols, such as wearing number plates, obeying pre-race instructions, and ensuring controlled riding. Specific rules are set for passing, using the Feed Zone, and interacting with other riders.
- Scoring and Awards: Points are awarded based on placement, and teams are ranked in divisions. Scoring matrices specify how team scores are calculated, with individual and team awards given at each race and season's end.
- Conduct and Behavior: ACA enforces strict behavior guidelines, including a no-tolerance policy for abusive behavior, discrimination, and harassment. Parents and coaches must avoid interfering during races and respect officials’ decisions.
This rulebook ensures ACA's mission of fostering a positive, disciplined cycling environment for youth athletes.
