Rider Equipment

Rider Equipment

To ensure safety and preparedness for all riders, the following equipment is required:

  • Mountain Bike: A properly sized, well-maintained hardtail or full suspension mountain bike. E-bikes are not permitted for students but are allowed for coaches.
  • Helmet: A mountain bike-style (not full-face), properly fitting helmet that is no more than five years old. Helmets equipped with MIPS technology are strongly recommended, as this technology is proven to reduce the risk of concussions. Virginia Tech provides unbiased helmet ratings here: https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html
  • Gloves: Full-finger, well-fitting gloves. Team-branded gloves are available for purchase during uniform ordering if you don't already have a preferred pair.
  • Eye Protection: Clear mountain bike-specific glasses are best, and can help reduce dust and debris and are generally better than your average sunglasses.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes: Flat-soled shoes with no holes and good coverage. While mountain bike-specific shoes exist for both flat and clipless pedals, many riders use sturdy tennis shoes.
  • Tubes: All riders, even those with tubeless setups, should have an extra tube available to them during all practices. Ensure the tube size matches your bike's wheel size.
  • Tire Levers: Any reliable tire lever will suffice for changing tubes or tires.
  • Hand Pump or CO₂ Inflator: A hand pump compatible with your bike's valve type is essential for on-trail inflation.
  • Patch Kit: A simple tube patch kit should be carried for minor repairs.
  • Multi-Tool with Chain Breaker: A compact multi-tool containing essential tools for on-trail repairs, ideally including a chain breaker.
  • Spare Quick-Link: Carry a spare quick-link matching your bike's chain speed (e.g., 12-speed, 11-speed). Count the number of cogs on your rear cassette to determine the correct size.
  • Hydration: A hydration pack holding 70-100 oz of water is crucial, especially during hot practices. Both fanny pack and backpack styles are acceptable.

Restricted Items:

  • Caffeine: ACA explicitly bans caffeine in any form, as well as any other performance-enhancing substances.
  • Headphones: Not allowed during practices or races for safety reasons.
  • E-Bikes for Students: Not permitted; only coaches may use e-bikes.
  • Sandals: Inappropriate footwear for riding.

Adhering to this equipment list ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all riders.

Selecting a Bike

When selecting a mountain bike for participation in the Alabama Cycling Association (ACA), it's essential to choose a bike that aligns with the rider's needs and the demands of the sport. The two primary categories of mountain bikes are:

1. Hardtail Mountain Bikes:

  • Design: Feature a rigid frame with suspension only on the front wheel.
  • Advantages:
    • Lighter weight, enhancing climbing efficiency.
    • Ideal for smooth trails and cross-country riding.
  • Considerations:
    • Less forgiving on rough terrain due to the lack of rear suspension.

2. Full Suspension Mountain Bikes:

  • Design: Equipped with suspension systems on both front and rear wheels.
  • Advantages:
    • Provides a smoother ride over rough terrain.
    • Offers better traction and control on technical descents.
  • Considerations:
    • Heavier and potentially less efficient on climbs and smooth trails.

Choosing the Right Bike:

  • Fit and Maintenance: Prioritize a bike that fits the rider's height, weight, and skill level. Proper maintenance is crucial for safety and performance.
  • Usage: Consider how the bike will be used during the off-season and the rider's motivation for joining the team.
  • Common Choices: Many team members opt for used, sub-$1,000 full suspension "Trail" bikes with medium suspension travel (under 140mm). These bikes balance comfort on descents with manageable weight for climbing.
  • Future Upgrades: As riders progress and aim for competitive performance, consulting with experienced team members and coaches can provide valuable guidance before making significant bike purchases.

Where to Purchase:

  • Used Bikes: Many riders acquire used bikes through classified ads or as hand-me-downs.
  • New Bikes: Brands like Specialized and Trek offer discounts to ACA athletes. Local bike shops familiar with the league can also assist in finding the right bike. We highly encourage you visit one of our sponsors, Velocity Cycles, at 401A 22nd Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.

Selecting the appropriate bike enhances the rider's experience and performance, contributing to a successful and enjoyable season.
